Special Screening of Left Behind

  • The Dairy Arts Center 2590 Walnut Street Boulder, CO, 80302 United States (map)

About the Film

Approximately 200,000 New York City public school students are dyslexic, yet there is no public initiative that provides the specialized skill and care necessary for these learners.

Left Behind follows a group of determined mothers who, frustrated that they had to remove their own kids from the public school system, band together to do something that's never been done before—open New York City's first public school for dyslexic students.

The journey is anything but smooth. They face institutional resistance, personal hurdles, and a bureaucratic education system resistant to change. When a new mayoral candidate reveals his own dyslexia and joins their fight, the momentum builds. But will it be enough to overhaul outdated policies and ensure a brighter future for the city's dyslexic youth?

This powerful documentary captures what happens when parents refuse to accept the status quo and fight for the education their children deserve.

Post-Film Discussion

Following the screening, join us for a conversation led by Kathy Sherman, Co-Founder and Director of Enrollment of the Hillside School & Center for Dyslexia. This is an opportunity to explore the themes of the film, discuss the state of dyslexia education in our own community, and consider how we can better support different kinds of learners.
